Misamis University Participates in the 3rd Anniversary of Mt. Malindang Cross-Border Tourism Federation 2026
Misamis University, through the funding support of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), played a significant role in the establishment and realization of the organization of Mt. Malindang Cross Border Tourism in 2023 under the project “Research-Based Capacity Building on Science Communication for an Ecologically Adaptive Tourism Management Contingent to Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park, Misamis Occidental”. The initiative began through a Capacity Development Training for tourism operators held at Villa Pablea Mountain Resort in Rizal, Zamboanga del Norte, attended by tourism stakeholders.
Misamis University participated in the 3rd Anniversary of the Mt. Malindang Cross-Border Tourism (MMCBT), celebrated on May 9, 2026. Held at the Gabon View Deck in Tuburan, Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte, the event marked the continuation of the partnership formed in 2023, emphasizing sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, and cultural heritage preservation.
The MMCBT aims to federate tourism operations across the tri-province area of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Misamis Occidental to strengthen collaboration and promote sustainable tourism development in the area. Atty. Orlando Salantandre, Jr., a visionary leader and tourism advocate, was elected president of the organization in 2023. Under his leadership, tourism operators are encouraged to support each other and collectively promote tourism enterprises in the three provinces that unify tourism operators in the tri-province.
During the event, Ms. Hanzen D. Tomatao (Project Researcher from Misamis University) delivered the rationale for the celebration, emphasizing the important role of Misamis University and local tourism operators in establishing the federation. The guests expressed strong support for the advocacy of MMCBT. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Catherine Rosauro, faculty of Hospitality Management of MU, highlighted the significant role of Mount Malindang Range Natural Park (MMRNP) to stakeholders and the importance of implementing sustainable tourism practices. She also emphasized educating the younger generation on protecting and preserving this wonderful natural treasure for future generations.
Among the notable guests present during the celebration were Dr. Reynaldo Manuel, President of NMSCST; Phil Eta A. Tiempo, Provincial Tourism Officer of Zamboanga del Norte; Dr. Thomas Cardiente, PENR Officer of DENR Bukidnon; representatives from TESDA and the Provincial Police Office of Zamboanga del Norte; as well as representatives from Sun Life, Light Shipping, the PNP of Sergio Osmeña, and ONE TV Pagadian City, Eagles, DepEd Misamis Occidental. Members of the federation and other distinguished guests also attended the event.
The event brought together stakeholders from Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Misamis Occidental, academic institutions, the shipping industry, insurance and tourism sectors, and environmental advocates to strengthen partnerships in promoting ecotourism and biodiversity conservation within the Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park.
