Around 150 MU Volunteers Make a Difference in Brigada Eskwela 2026
Continuing its strong commitment to community engagement and public service, Misamis University (MU) actively participated in the 2026 Brigada Eskwela program from June 1-5. An estimated 150 MU faculty, staff, and students extended their support to partner schools in Ozamiz City and in Misamis Occidental, demonstrating dedication to promoting quality education, volunteerism, and collaborative community development
With this year’s theme, “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman,” Brigada Eskwela emphasizes unity, volunteerism, and collective responsibility in preparing learning institutions for the opening of classes. Brigada Eskwela is an annual DepEd initiative that mobilizes stakeholders and community partners to support school readiness activities, such as cleaning school premises, minor classroom repairs, maintenance of school furniture, and improvements to learning facilities.
Misamis Annex Integrated School (MAIS) was among the schools that formally opened the Brigada Eskwela on June 1. During the program, Dr. Cynthia S. Superable, Dean of the MU Graduate School, delivered a short message emphasizing continued partnership and collaboration in community extension and engagement. Dr. Candelaria P. Maghanoy, MAIS Principal and MU CED Alumna, expressed gratitude to the various partners who shared time and resources for the improvement of the school. The kick-off ceremony was attended by Mrs. Myrna Cartajenas (Director of MU Libraries); Dr. Elsa B. Buenavidez (Community Extension Coordinator of Graduate School); members of the Barangay Council of Carmen Annex, headed by Atty. Neil Patrick M. Cartajenas, a barangay councilor and MU Law alumnus; Barangay Health Workers (BHW), Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) members; teaching personnel; and students of MAIS.
Throughout the weeklong implementation, MU volunteers actively participated in various school-based activities, contributing manpower, time, and resources to support partner schools. The university mobilized participants from the Graduate School, College of Agriculture and Forestry, College of Business and Management, MU Learning Resource Center, Basic Education - Senior High School Department, College of Education, and College of Criminology. Aside from MAIS, MU volunteers also visited the following partner schools: Ozamiz City National High School (OCNHS); Ozamiz City Central School (OCCS); Bangkal Kinder School (BKS); Ozamiz City School of Arts and Trades (OCSAT); and Barra Elementary School.
Misamis University, through its Community Extension Programs, continues to strengthen its partnerships with local schools and communities by promoting service-oriented initiatives that support educational development and the creation of greener and more sustainable learning environments. The university emphasized that its participation in the 2026 Brigada Eskwela reflects its sustained commitment to extension services and its mission of fostering meaningful collaboration with stakeholders in advancing quality education.
MU also expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Renzitelo Alf P. Carpio, Dean of the College of Business Management, for generously providing snacks for the volunteers; to Dr. Jose F. Cuevas, Dean of the College of Criminology; Dr. Oliver S. Talip, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Forestry; Dr. Genelyn R. Baluyos, Dean of the College of Education; and Mr. James S. Bazar, Principal of the Basic Education Department, for allowing their faculty, staff, and student volunteers to participate. Special thanks are likewise extended to Dr. Karen Belina De Leon for providing transportation during the activity. Their collective contributions played a vital role in the successful implementation of Brigada Eskwela 2026.
