Admission, Retention, Residency Policy and Graduation Requirements


Doctoral Degree Program:

A. Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Program

1. Admission Policy

  • The dean or his/her designated adviser shall serve as Chairman of the Admission Committee of the program002E
  • Prospective student seeking admission in the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program must be a graduate of a master’s degree (Thesis Program) in Education.
  • Applicants who are graduates of master’s program in arts or science must have earned at least 12 units Education subjects either in the bachelor’s or master’s degree programs. Applicants without earned units in Education in the bachelor’s or master’s degree shall be required to enroll at least 12 units Education courses before admission to the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program.
  • Applicants who are graduates of non-thesis master’s program will be required to enroll 6-unit Independent Research Course should they proceed to the Doctor of Education program.

2. Retention Policy

  • All curricular requirements/course works for a doctoral degree must be completed within the period of nine (9) years after the student’s first enrolment in the program (CMO No. 53, s. 2007, Sec. 18).
  • A student who finished the academic requirements/course work and is inactive for more than five (5) years shall be required to enroll nine (9) units refresher courses subject to re-evaluation and approval of the program head or the dean prior to taking the Comprehensive Examination.
  • A student who took and passed the Comprehensive Examination of the program and is inactive for more than five (5) years shall be required to enroll nine (9) units refresher courses subject to re-evaluation and approval of the program head or the dean and shall be required to retake the Comprehensive Examination of the major courses of the program.
  • A student whose enrolment in the doctoral degree is not completed within the prescribed period of nine (9) years shall be required to shift to the new or revised curriculum of the program. If no revision of the curriculum is made, the student shall be required to enroll a three (3) units refresher course per year of lapse or extension subject to re-evaluation and approval of the program head or the dean.
  • Transferee and returnee students shall also be required to comply with the aforementioned retention policy and shall be evaluated by the program head or the dean based on the existing guidelines.

3. Residency and Graduation Requirements

  • Only students who have satisfactorily complied with the following requirements are eligible for graduation:
  • Must be a resident in the University for at least two semesters and must have earned not less than 18 units immediately or prior to graduation.
  • Must have completed the specified requirements of the course leading to the doctoral degree.
  • Must be officially enrolled at the time he/she applies for graduation.
  • Must have filed/submitted the accomplished Application for Graduation to the Registrar’s Office duly noted by the Dean during his/her last term of enrolment.
  • Candidate for graduation who fails to submit the accomplished Application for graduation during the specific term shall be required to enroll at least six (6) units refresher courses to comply with the residency and graduation requirements and shall also be required to re-enroll Dissertation Writing.

Master’s Degree Program

1. Admission Requirements

  • The dean or his/her designated adviser shall serve as the Chairman of the Admission Committee.
  • Prospective student seeking admission to the master’s degree program must be a graduate of a bachelor’s degree in arts or sciences.
  • Applicant for the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program must be a graduate of a bachelors’ degree in education. Graduates of bachelor’s degree in arts or science with at least twelve (12) earned units in education subjects are also eligible for admission in the program. Graduates of bachelor’s degree in arts or science without earned units in education subjects shall be required to enroll at least twelve (12) units education courses before admission to the MAEd program.
  • Applicant for the Master in Business Administration and Master in Public Administration programs must be a graduate of bachelor’s degree in any field of specialization.
  • Applicant for the Master of Arts in Nursing and Master in Nursing programs must be a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

2. Retention Policy

  • All curricular requirements or course work for a master’s degree must be completed within seven (7) years after the student’s first enrolment in the program (CMO No. 53, s. 2007, Sec. 18).

  • A candidate for graduation from a non-thesis program must be a resident in the University for at least two semesters and must have earned not less than 18 units course work in the program including integrating course such as special problem or practicum immediately or prior to graduation.
  • A candidate for graduation from a thesis program must be a resident in the University for at least two semesters and must have earned not less than 18 units course work in the program prior to Thesis Writing.
  • Must have completed the specified requirements of the course leading to the master’s degree.
  • Must be officially enrolled in the University at the time he/she applies for graduation.
  • Must have filed and submitted the accomplished Application for Graduation to the Registrars’ Officeduly noted by the Dean during his/her last term of enrolment.
  • Candidate for graduation who fails to submit the accomplished Application for Graduation during the specific term shall be required to enroll at least six (6) units refresher courses to comply with the residency and graduation requirements and shall also be required to re-enroll Thesis Writing.
