2025 Month of the Ocean Wraps Up with Mangrove Tree Planting and Coastal Clean-up in Clarin
The 2025 Month of the Ocean culminated in a Mangrove Tree Planting and Coastal Clean-up at Barangay De La Paz, Clarin, Misamis Occidental on May 26, 2025. Participating agencies include Misamis University; Misamis Occidental Volunteers for Environment (MOVE) - MU Chapter; Global Port Terminal of Ozamiz City; Philippine Ports Authority; Philippine Coast Guard; Bureau of Jail Management and Penology; Bureau of Fire Protection; Philippine Ports Authority; La Salle University; and Philippine Statistics Authority. They collectively planted 1,800 Bakuan Mangrove propagules. Subsequently, a coastal clean-up was carried out, resulting in the collection of 10 bags of assorted trash and debris. The act demonstrated a unified effort towards environmental restoration and protection.
The event was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) - Ozamiz City, in partnership with the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Clarin, Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of De La Paz, and other partner institutions in Misamis Occidental.
The theme “Unlock Ocean-Based Solutions to Climate Change” highlighted the urgent need to address the significant challenges facing our oceans. It emphasized the importance of deepening our understanding of ocean-climate interactions and identifying practical solutions to mitigate climate change and adapt to its impact. It also reinforces the call for conservation and the adoption of sustainable ocean practices.
A mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata), R. mucronata, is a type of species reaching 8 – 25 meters in height with prominent stilt or prop roots that provide stability in soft and waterlogged mud. It serves as a coastal barrier against storms and erosion, provides nursery grounds for fish, and plays an essential role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
As a committed Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the Philippines, Misamis University remains steadfast in its mission to uphold and participate in meaningful environmental initiatives. The university reaffirms its strong commitment to protecting and rehabilitating critical ecosystems — particularly those supported by the oceans — to ensure the sustainability of natural resources for present and future generations.
