Misamis University Celebrates Earth and Forests Days 2025
Misamis University renewed its commitment to environmental sustainability by participating in two major tree growing activities in celebration of the 2025 International Earth Day and the International Day of Forests.
The Earth Day celebration, guided by this year’s global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) Ozamiz City. The tree growing activity took place on April 23, 2025, at Barangay Penacio, Clarin, Misamis Occidental.
Several government agencies and organizations also took part in the initiative, including the Global Ports Terminal Ozamiz City, Philippine Ports Authority – Misamis Occidental, Philippine Coast Guard Misamis Occidental, PNP Maritime Police, Bureau of Jail Management and Phenology and the Philippine Statistics Authority Misamis Occidental.
Two hundred Mahogany seedlings (Swietenia macrophylla) were planted. This hardwood species is highly valued for its use in furniture-making, construction, and reforestation projects due to its durability, rapid growth, and ability to thrive in a wide range of environments.
In another tree growing activity Misamis University participated in the International Day of Forests on March 21, 2025 at Barangay Hoyohoy, Tangub City, Misamis Occidental with the theme “Forests and Foods”. The event was again facilitated by DENR-CENRO, Ozamiz City. It was joined by LGU Tangub personnel, BLGU of Hoyohoy officials, 10th IB Philippine Army, MU employees, and MU-based organizations like the Misamis Occidental Volunteers for the Environment (MOVE) and the Basic Education Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) Club, and other national government agencies.
During the activity, three hundred Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) seedlings were planted. Narra, the national tree of the Philippines, is not only known for its economic value and resilience, but also for its ecological role in enriching soil and providing habitat for local wildlife.
Through these initiatives, Misamis University continues to demonstrate its active role in environmental protection, management, and sustainable development in partnership with key government agencies in Misamis Occidental and local communities.
