MU's Smart Springs Research Earns NRCP Approval for Possible 2028 Funding
A new research initiative at Misamis University is putting spring water at the center of scientific inquiry, with the goal of advancing safe water management and climate resilience.
Led by Dr. Yunalyn L. Villantes, the research project “Smart Springs: Spatial Indicators for Safe Water and Climate Resilience” has been approved by the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Governing Board for possible funding under the 2028 NRCP Grants- in-Aid Program.
The approval was granted during the NRCP Governing Board’s Special Meeting on July 24, 2026, with an approved proposed budget of Php 3,997,843.60.
The project will develop spatial indicators for assessing the safety, vulnerability, and resilience of spring water resources. By combining spatial and environmental data, the study aims to provide scientific evidence that can help identify conditions affecting spring water and support more informed approaches to its management and protection.
The research comes at a time when climate and environmental changes are placing increasing pressure on water resources. Its findings are expected to contribute to water resource planning, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and community resilience, particularly in areas that depend on springs as sources of water.
Beyond its scientific objectives, Smart Springs is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It directly advances SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 13: Climate Action, while also contributing to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 15: Life on Land through sustainable resource management and the protection of freshwater environments.
The NRCP approval marks a significant achievement for MU research and highlights the relevance of its researchers’ work to pressing environmental concerns. It also reinforces the University's commitment to research that connects scientific knowledge with practical solutions for communities and the environment.
With Smart Springs, MU is exploring how data, science, and innovation can help transform the understanding of natural water sources into knowledge that supports a safer and more resilient future.
