MU@97: Honoring a Legacy, Building Toward 100 Years
Three years before its centennial, Misamis University celebrated not only how far it has come but also the people, experiences, and aspirations that will carry it forward.
Guided by the theme, “MU@97: Celebrating the Past, Transforming the Present, Shaping the Future,” the University marked its 97th Foundation Anniversary from October 12 to 14, 2026, bringing together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community. The Basic Education Department held its celebration earlier, on October 8, 2026.
The theme served as a thread connecting the University's history with its continuing pursuit of growth and development. Through activities that highlighted student talent, academic engagement, community service, and institutional tradition, MU@97 reflected the many ways a university's legacy lives on beyond its years of existence.
Competition remained a major highlight, with the College of Nursing, Midwifery, and Radiologic Technology (CNMRT) retaining its title as overall champion for the second consecutive year. The College of Business and Management (CBM) secured first runner-up, followed by the College of Maritime Education (CME) in second place and the College of Engineering and Technology (CET) in third.
Across the celebration, students demonstrated their skills and school spirit through the athletic games, esports competition, Mr. and Ms. Intramurals, Cheer and Dance Competition, and Musical Competition, which featured Pop Singing, Pop Dance, and Hip Hop categories. The Battle of the Bands added another dimension to the festivities, bringing musical performances to the forefront and giving students another avenue to express their creativity.
Beyond the competitions, MU@97 opened opportunities for learning, leadership, reconnection, and service. The Induction of Officers formally welcomed the newly elected officers of student organizations, marking their commitment to leadership and service within the University community. Alumni talks brought graduates back into the University's academic community, allowing students to gain insights from experiences beyond the campus. A campus tour also welcomed senior high school students from various schools, offering them a glimpse of university life and the opportunities available at Misamis University.
The celebration also extended into the wider community through a Civic Parade around Ozamiz City and Joint Community Extension Activities organized by the colleges. These initiatives reflected the University's role not only as an institution of learning but also as a partner in community development.
Traditions remained an essential part of the anniversary. A Thanksgiving Mass offered an opportunity for reflection and gratitude, while the Barrio Fiesta brought the warmth of shared meals, cultural traditions, and community fellowship into the celebration. The Playground Demonstration highlighted the talents, skills, and creativity of young learners through engaging presentations and performances. Faculty and staff enjoyed a nostalgic evening during the Faculty and Staff Retro Night, while Student Night gave students time to celebrate their friendships and experiences outside the classroom.
As Misamis University approaches its 100th Foundation Anniversary in 2029, the theme of MU@97 takes on added significance. Celebrating the past means recognizing the foundations built since the University's establishment in 1929. Transforming the present means continuing to respond to the needs of learners and communities. Shaping the future means preparing the next generation to carry the University's mission forward.
The road to 100 is therefore more than a countdown to a historic milestone. It is an ongoing process of building on past achievements, creating meaningful opportunities in the present, and preparing for what lies ahead. With three years remaining before its centennial, Misamis University moves forward with a legacy shaped by generations of learners, educators, alumni, and partners. The festivities of MU@97 may have concluded, but the work of celebrating its history, transforming its present, and shaping its future continues.
Led by Overall Chair Dr. Sammy B. Taghoy, the anniversary brought together the University's different colleges and departments in a celebration that balanced competition with collaboration, and institutional tradition with new experiences. Misamis University also extends its congratulations and appreciation to the organizing committee, participating colleges and departments, faculty, staff, students, and everyone who contributed their time and effort to making MU@97 a meaningful and successful celebration.
As Misamis University moves closer to a century of educational service, every milestone becomes part of a larger story, one that continues to be written by its community and carried forward by its beloved institution, Mahal Naming Pamantasan.
