Giving Back to the Community: A Legacy of 95 Years and Beyond

Misamis University embodied its mission of responding to the needs of the community, exposing students to real-world situations by engaging in community extension and promoting unity and collaboration. In celebration of the school’s 95th Foundation Anniversary, one of the traditions was to conduct a Joint Community Extension and Medical-Dental Outreach Program. It was participated by around 200 faculty, students, and staff from the different colleges and departments last October 10, 2024. It was held in the community of Barangay Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental.

Barra, a coastal community, has been a long-time partner of the College of Maritime Education through their Coastal Resources Regeneration and Alternative Livelihood (CoRRAL) Project since 2010. The department has conducted several extension activities, such as (1) environmental classes for the youth, women, fisherfolks, and residents; (2) mangrove growing; (3) coastal clean-up; (4) support for pots and plots vegetable gardening; (5) construction of communal toilets; (6) distribution of rakes, trash bins, school supplies, and PPEs like facemasks, alcohol, face shields, and BPAT uniforms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the 2024 Joint Community Extension, a medical mission in a barangay’s covered court was led by Dr. Leslee Joy Legupra, Dr. Jean Tolentino, and nurses from Misamis University Medical Center (MUMC). They were assisted by the College of Nursing, Midwifery, and Radiologic Technology. Nurses checked vital signs and distributed medicines at the mini-pharmacy. A hundred and nine patients were catered for the day. In another corner, the College of Medical Technology conducted a blood typing service for 48 residents. They also distributed educational materials about dengue awareness and prevention due to the rising cases in the province for the past months

During MUCEP’s initial dialogue with the community leaders, they emphasized the need for a communal toilet. The previous toilet donated by Misamis University through the CoRRAL Project was in dire need of renovation. Thus, the College of Engineering and Technology conducted an assessment, design consultations, and inspection as well as the provision of materials for common facilities including 5 Galvanized Iron sheets, 1 kg of nails, 2 solar panels, and 9 bulbs for the communal comfort rooms. Meanwhile, Mediatrix Homes Inc., through the MU Graduate School, donated 5 toilet bowls for the communal comfort rooms that will address one of the hygiene needs of the community.
