Misuga Management Services, Inc. Launches Cadetship Training Program at Misamis University
Misuga Management Services, Inc., a branch office of Misuga Company, a Japanese shipping enterprise headquartered in Tokyo and Shikoku, Japan, serves as an agency responsible for manning the company’s ships, which transport cargoes worldwide. To address the growing need for ship officers, Misuga developed the Cadetship Program to recruit and train future officers who will play a vital role in their global operations.
As part of this initiative, MisugaManagement Services, Inc., a partner company of Misamis University, launched the Cadetship Training Program for first-year Maritime students, led by Mr. Oliver Q. Velasco, on February 20–21, 2025, at the Misamis University Function Hall. The program begins with recruitment through a qualifying examination and interviews.
On February 20, as the recruitment process began, Mr. Velasco conducted a qualifying examination in the morning for 24 Maritime students (15 from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and 9 from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering). The event was facilitated by Capt. Allan M. Abucay, Dean of the College of Maritime Education; Engr. Maurece S. Bonita, On-Board Training Supervisor; and Capt. Arturo M. Genon, Assistant On-Board Training Supervisor.
Of the 24 students who took the exam, 15 passed and proceeded to the interview held in the afternoon. After the interview, six students were chosen as the final qualified cadets: Kayyom M. Abdulla, FJ B. Boniao, Jette Lawrence B. Cabrido, and Hesham M. Pangcatan for BS Marine Transportation, and Allan Geoff Gerome S. Abing and Clinton H. Abcede for BS Marine Engineering.
The selected cadets will undergo a 12-month apprenticeship aboard Misuga ships, receiving monthly allowances throughout their training. After completing their classroom instruction in their third year, the cadets will proceed to Pre-Embarkation Training, where they will be trained in technical skills, discipline, and professionalism before starting their shipboard apprenticeship.
The Cadetship Program follows a comprehensive career pathway. It begins with recruitment and selection through events like this, where cadets must pass a qualifying exam and interview. Next is a 12-month apprenticeship aboard Misuga ships worldwide. After completing their apprenticeship, cadets return to Misamis University to complete their bachelor’s degree and take the licensure examination.
Upon passing the licensure exam, cadets may sign another contract with Misuga as junior officers. With continued dedication and experience, they can climb the ranks to become Masters or Captains of their ships.
On February 21, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing was held at MU Manor between Misuga and the parents of the cadet passers. The event began with an orientation to familiarize the cadets and their families with the company’s nature and background. The orientation and signing were graced by Dr. Orlando De Leon, Special Assistant to the President, along with the presence of Dr. Cynthia S. Superable, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Mrs. Nelpa N. Capio, Director of Student Affairs; and Dr. Lloyd B. Ranises, Linkage and Networking Officer.
Dr. De Leon delivered an inspiring message, encouraging the cadets not only to complete their training but also to aspire to become ship Masters and Captains. His speech resonated with both the students and their parents.
Additionally, the 2022 cadetship passers, Sylvester L. Aquino, TG D. Dumacaya, Clark Kenth L. Estrevillo, Neil Bryan E. Galorio, and Miguel James L. Pacto, also participated in the MOA signing. During their recruitment in 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Misuga had not yet been executed, as the company had yet to establish a formal agreement with Misamis University at that time. Now, with the MOU officially in place, they were able to participate in the MOA signing, formally binding them to Misuga and preparing their career path after they reach their third year.
After the MOA signing, Mr. Velasco conducted a pinning ceremony where he presented a pin to each cadet passer, fastening it to their collar on stage alongside their parent. This symbolizes an official welcome into the company. After the ceremony, they were awarded certificates recognizing them as qualified to join the Misuga Cadetship Training Program. This event marks an important step toward a successful seafaring career.
To all the cadets who passed the rigorous selection process: Your journey to success in the maritime industry has just begun. Congratulations!
