Misamis University Holds Internationalization Forum Series on Opportunities in Germany

Misamis University hosted the Internationalization Forum Series on March 7 and 8, 2025, designed to provide a platform for faculty and students to explore opportunities in Germany, including scholarships, research collaborations, and training programs related to internationalization.

One of the forums in this series focused on Academic Opportunities in German Universities and was held on March 7, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Function Hall of Misamis University, Ozamiz City. This session aimed to introduce scholarship programs offered by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), also known as the German Academic Exchange Service. These programs provide students with career pathways that integrate advanced studies in Germany to enhance their professional growth.

The forum featured Dr. Monica Fröhlich, a DAAD Representative, and Mr. Gerald G. Aguilar, a DAAD scholar and recipient of the In-Country/In-Region Scholarships Program. They served as resource speakers, presenting various opportunities available at German universities.

The event gathered 130 selected students from the Hospitality Management, Business, Agriculture, Nursing, Medical Technology, Dentistry, Computer Studies, Engineering, and Psychology programs.

In his welcome address, Dr. Lloyd Ranises, the Linkage Officer, emphasized Europe's significant investment in scholarships for advanced studies, particularly through DAAD. He also emphasized the importance of tracking MU graduates' progression in master's and PhD programs for world ranking applications. This forum served as a strategic initiative to encourage students to pursue higher education abroad in response to these opportunities and needs.

Dr. Fröhlich provided comprehensive information on academic opportunities in Germany. She introduced DAAD as the world’s largest funding institution for academic mobility and elaborated on the extensive scholarships DAAD offers to international students, including Filipinos.

She provided key online resources for students to explore available scholarship programs. She emphasized that students must actively search for opportunities through DAAD’s online portals, where detailed information is readily accessible. Dr. Fröhlich also stressed the importance of German language proficiency for students planning to study in Germany.

Following her presentation, Mr. Aguilar shared his personal experience as a recipient of the In- Country/In-Region Scholarships Program. This scholarship covered all expenses for his Master of Environmental Science at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam from 2021 to 2023. Thai Nguyen University, accredited by DAAD, is partnered with Greifswald University in Germany. Under the program, scholars could choose universities outside Germany, with courses taught by professors from Germany, the United States, Finland, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Mr. Aguilar also shared how DAAD scholars benefit from networking and collaborations with peers from different nationalities. He highlighted post-graduation opportunities, such as DAAD alumni events and research trips, including a climate-smart agriculture research in Son La, Vietnam. He also recounted his research trips across Europe, visiting Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, and Paris, showcasing the broader career prospects for DAAD scholars.

During the open forum, paramedical students expressed interest in working in Germany rather than pursuing graduate studies. However, speakers clarified that while employment is possible, it requires proficiency in the German language. Dr. Ranises mentioned that Misamis University is exploring partnerships with Austrian institutions to integrate foreign language courses, including German, into the paramedical curriculum.

The discussion also covered details about cost of living in Germany and application requirements. While outstanding undergraduate grades were considered beneficial, they were not necessarily mandatory.

It was highlighted that some Philippine degree programs, such as Psychology and Hospitality Management, may not have direct German graduate program equivalents. However, students were encouraged to explore related fields and opportunities through the comprehensive DAAD scholarship database.

The Internationalization Forum Series provided valuable insights into academic and scholarship opportunities in Germany. It reinforced Misamis University’s commitment to supporting students in their pursuit of international education and global career development.
