Misamis University Participates in Earth Month 2026 Mangrove Planting of Nearly 10, 500 Propagules in Barangay Mialen, Clarin
On April 17, 2026, a mangrove tree-growing activity of nearly 10,500 propagules highlighted the celebration of Earth Month 2026 in Barangay Mialen, Clarin, Misamis Occidental. The observance of Earth Month is anchored on Presidential Proclamation No. 1482, issued on April 10, 2008, which officially declares April as Earth Month in the Philippines. This year's theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” emphasizes collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Ozamiz City, in partnership with Misamis University (MU) and various participating groups. MU was represented by 50 faculty, staff, and students from the College of Arts and Sciences; College of Education; College of Medical Technology; College of Business and Management; College of Agriculture and Forestry; and the Accounting Department, along with the Misamis Occidental Volunteers for Environment (MOVE) - MU Chapter.
The activity promotes strong collaboration from local government units and national agencies, non-government organizations, including the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Mialen, the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) of Clarin, CLIMBS Life and General Insurance Cooperative, the Philippine Ports Authority, the Philippine Coast Guard (Misamis Occidental and Clarin), and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
Supervising the activity were CENR Officer Elizabeth Gran; Hon. Rey M. Ebarle, Mialen Barangay Captain; Raymond Butalid, Clarin MENR Officer; Dr. Genelyn R. Baluyos, MU College of Education Dean; and Dr. Haydee D. Villanueva, MU College of Arts and Sciences Dean, together with volunteers from participating institutions.
The mangrove tree-growing activity reflects a shared commitment to a greener and safer coastal environment while contributing to climate change mitigation. By restoring mangrove ecosystems, the initiative supports biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and long-term environmental sustainability in Misamis Occidental.
