A Second Chance That Changed Everything
Looking at Hannah today, it would be easy to believe that the journey to becoming a healthcare professional—and eventually placing Top 5 in the Midwifery Licensure Examination—was a smooth and straightforward one. The professional titles, licenses, and impressive board performance tell a story of success. Yet behind every achievement lies a story few people see—a journey marked by failure, resilience, and the courage to begin again.
Growing up alongside an older brother, Hannah was no stranger to academic expectations. Excelling in school had always been second nature, and being an honor student became part of that identity. But during the final semester of the third year in Nursing, everything changed. As clinical duties became more demanding and the pressure of research intensified, the unimaginable happened. For the first time, Hannah failed. It was more than an academic setback—it was a moment that shattered confidence and cast doubt on a lifelong dream. The institution where Hannah was studying made it clear that there was no longer a place to continue the program. "My world collapsed," Hannah recalled. "Sitting in my room, staring at my hands, I believed the labels of failure. I thought, 'Maybe I'm just not smart enough to heal people.'"
What seemed like the end of the journey became the beginning of a new chapter at Misamis University. Carrying the weight of disappointment and self-doubt, Hannah arrived not with a perfect academic record, but with the hope that someone would look beyond a failing mark. Misamis University did exactly that. Instead of viewing a struggling student as a liability or a statistic, the University saw potential and chose to invest in it. "I didn't walk through MU's doors with a perfect transcript; I walked in carrying the heavy baggage of a student who had stumbled badly," Hannah shared. "Yet, instead of viewing me as a liability or a statistic, MU saw my potential. They handed me a clean slate and said, 'We will give you a chance.'" That opportunity became the turning point that changed everything. More than providing a place to continue an education, Misamis University restored a dream that once seemed lost. Through the guidance of dedicated clinical instructors, Hannah rediscovered confidence, purpose, and self-worth. "My clinical instructors didn't just teach me the nursing process; they restored my dignity. They reminded me that a single failing mark does not define the capacity of a human heart to care."
Fueled by that second chance, Hannah embraced every opportunity with renewed determination. Failure was no longer something to hide from—it became the foundation of resilience. The experience shaped not only technical competence but also compassion, humility, and perseverance. After completing the Nursing program, Hannah went on to work as a private nurse in the Netherlands, providing care while gaining valuable professional experience across Europe before eventually returning to the Philippines to continue serving others. Through every milestone, one promise remained constant: to make Misamis University proud by honoring the faith the institution had placed in a student who had once questioned whether the dream was still possible.
The greatest test came with the Midwifery Licensure Examination. While balancing the demands of professional practice, Hannah had fewer than 24 days to prepare for one of the most important examinations of a healthcare career. The limited time brought moments of anxiety and uncertainty, but unlike before, failure no longer inspired fear. It became a reminder of how far the journey had come. Every setback had prepared Hannah for this moment. When the examination results were released, years of perseverance culminated in an extraordinary achievement—Top 5. It was more than a remarkable board rating; it was a powerful affirmation that failure is never the final chapter for those willing to rise again.
Hannah's story stands as a testament to the transformative power of second chances. Looking back, the achievement is measured not only by a place among the country's highest-performing examinees, but by the journey that made it possible. Proud to call Misamis University a sanctuary of second chances, Hannah believes the institution does more than educate—it believes in people, even when they struggle to believe in themselves. To every student facing a failed quiz, a difficult revalida, the pressures of research, or moments of uncertainty, Hannah offers this reminder: "Your current position is not your final destination."
Reflecting on the lessons she carried from her own journey, Hannah shared, "Nursing is not about never falling; it is about how you rise. Failure is a brutal teacher, but it equips you with the empathy and grit required for the hospital floor. Because of my setback, I can look at a hopeless patient and say with absolute conviction, 'Don't give up. I've been there, and you will get through this.'"
Sometimes, the greatest success stories begin not with perfection, but with the courage to start again. And if a student who once believed the dream had ended could one day stand among the country's board topnotchers, then every aspiring MUan has every reason to believe that their own story is still unfolding.
