Building Coastal Resilience: MU Criminology Leads Mangrove Planting and Shoreline Clean-Up in Barra, Tudela
The Fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Criminology students of the College of Criminology, Misamis University successfully conducted a mangrove tree-growing and coastal clean-up activity at the coastal area of Barangay Barra in Tudela, Misamis Occidental, on December 6, 2025, as part of their community extension and environmental protection initiative.
The activity aimed to strengthen environmental awareness and encourage active community participation in protecting coastal and marine ecosystems. During the event, the students planted 1,000 mangrove propagules along the shoreline to help prevent coastal erosion, enhance marine biodiversity, and reinforce the community’s natural defense against storm surges and flooding. Simultaneously, a coastal clean-up drive was conducted, during which students and community volunteers collected plastic waste and other debris that pose serious threats to marine life and the overall coastal environment.
The activity was supervised by Mr. Edmar Daniel, faculty member and community extension coordinator of the College of Criminology, in coordination with the Barangay Council and the constituents of Barangay Barra, headed by Hon. Jemson Faulan, Barangay Captain.
The initiative emphasized the importance of proper waste management and environmental responsibility among local residents and student participants. More than just an environmental initiative, the activity served as a practical demonstration of the students’ teamwork, discipline, leadership, and social responsibility, core values essential in the field of criminology.
Through this meaningful engagement, the students not only contributed to environmental sustainability but also strengthened their commitment to public service and community development. This outreach initiative reflects MU’s dedication to shaping socially responsible, community-oriented, and environmentally conscious future law enforcement professionals.
