Yellow is the New Green: Misamis University and MUMC Lead the Way in Sustainability
Misamis University and the Misamis University Medical Center marked a major milestone in environmental stewardship with the adoption of a first-class solar-powered energy system across the campus and hospital, reinforcing their commitment to clean, renewable energy in Misamis Occidental.
The initiative was formally turned over during a ceremony led by WeGen Energy Philippines on February 10, 2026, at the H.T.F. Activity Center of Misamis University. The project marks a significant step toward achieving long-term energy efficiency and climate-resilient development.
University President Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon and Vice President for Administration Dr. Orlando D. De Leon emphasized that sustainability is a core pillar of the institution’s long-term vision. The transition to solar energy is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs while minimizing carbon emissions, contributing to a healthier environment for students, patients, employees, and the surrounding community.
During the program, WeGen Energy Philippines representative Ms. Ina Alleco R. Silverio underscored the moral responsibility of institutions to respond proactively to climate change, describing solar energy as both a practical and ethical solution. This was followed by a technical presentation from Mr. Edmon Alcantara Dela Paz and Engr. Kelly S. Caipang, who explained the system’s operation and maintenance, highlighted its role in ensuring a reliable energy supply while reducing the institution’s environmental footprint.
The solar energy initiative aligns with Misamis University’s mission to enhance the quality of life of its learners and with the Misamis University Medical Center’s commitment to promoting public health and community well-being through sustainable practices.
Through this transition to renewable energy, Misamis University contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 13 (Climate Action).
Clean energy means clean air, a reminder that progress should never come at the expense of the environment. True sustainable innovation is achieved when development and environmental protection move forward together, ensuring that today’s advancements preserve a better, healthier future for generations to come.
