Iligan Bay Alliance of Misamis Occidental (IBAMO) Partners with Misamis University to Protect Marine Waters
IBAMO (Iligan Bay Alliance of Misamis Occidental), partners with Misamis University for the conservation of Marine Waters. MU signed a memorandum of agreement on December 17, 2019 officially making it a member of IBAMO. Eight local government units, and the regional offices of different government agencies have also renewed their membership with IBAMO.
The IBAMO, headed by Mayor Francisco T. Paylaga Jr., IBAMO Chairperson, is the organization tasked with protecting the Iligan Bay from pollution, overfishing and overharvesting of marine resources. With the pressing need for conservation of Iligan Bay the alliance seeks to develop and implement more sustainable coastal management programs. IBAMO also aims to modernize the agriculture and fisheries sector and to enforce stricter fishing laws to enhance profitability and employment in the fishing sector. The alliance serves as a model to other bay-wide alliances in the Philippines that aim to benefit small-scale fishers dependent on local coastal and marine resources, protect these resources, and ensure their productive capacity.
As member, Misamis University will be helping with the development of conservation programs and shall extend financial assistance to the alliance. The local government units of Tudela, Sinacaban, Jimenez, Panaon, Aloran, Lopez Jaena, Oroquieta City, and Plaridel, along with Misamis University Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-X), the Department of Agriculture (DA-X), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-X), the Department of Tourism (DOT-X), the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-X), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-X), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-X), and the Philippine University of Science and Technology (PUST) make up the Iligan Bay Alliance of Misamis Occidental.
