Misamis University Initiatives for a Smoke-Free and Healthy Campus
Misamis University is committed to promote healthy university environment. MU adopted a smoke-free campus policy as early as 2007, following the directive of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order No. 63, issued in accordance with the provisions of Republic Act 7722 and in compliance with Republic Act 9211 (Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003). This national directive mandated all schools and universities to prohibit smoking within their premises. As part of compliance, MU submits semi-annual reports to CHED Regional Offices detailing the actions undertaken to implement the policy.
In 2024, the university reinforced its smoke-free commitment by integrating policy reminders into student, faculty, and staff orientations as well as the General Assembly. These sessions emphasized the prohibition of smoking inside the campus, ensuring that the entire academic community remains aware of and aligned with MU’s health and wellness standards.
To further strengthen implementation, MU installed no-smoking signages in strategic locations across the campus, including college buildings, laboratories, classrooms, lobbies, pergolas, canteens, offices, and stairways. These visible reminders serve not only as enforcement tools but also as educational prompts that reinforce the university’s dedication to creating a safe, clean, and health-conscious learning environment.
Through these initiatives, Misamis University continues to uphold its mission of fostering a healthy and sustainable campus, protecting the wellbeing of its students, faculty, staff, and visitors while contributing to broader public health goals.
