College of Agriculture and Forestry--Future Agriculturists Launched Suburban Community Gardening: Teamnabangay Gulayan sa Barangay Project at Barangay Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental
In rendering voluntarism and sharing of resources, the Misamis University College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) launched the Suburban Community Gardening with the theme of “Gulayan sa Barangay, Teamnabangay”, held on November 24, 2024, at the Covered Court of Brgy. Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental. There were eighty (80) participants, mostly represented by the women sector coming from different groups - 4Ps beneficiaries, BPATs, Women’s Organization, Senior Citizens, and members of the Barangay Council.
CAF signed a Memorandum of Agreement for their partnership with the Brgy. Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental. The main goal of the collaboration is to help the community respond to malnutrition. Different colleges of the university were called to join and assist in improving the health and well-being of the Barra residents. CAF, moreover, aimed to set up a sustainable community garden that is accessible to the whole barangay. This not only addresses the malnutrition dilemma, but can also help the community in boosting their local economy, and promotes camaraderie that can ensure the success of the program.
The Barangay Council Chairman on Agriculture, Hon. Francisco A. Belano, Jr., welcomed both the participants and the representatives from the MU-CAF for the launching of their community gardening project. This joint partnership focuses on the establishment of a sustainable community garden, emphasizing the adoption of vertical farming. Hon. Belano gave his appreciation to Misamis University College of Agriculture for sharing technical expertise and resources. He was hopeful for the learning of the participants from the lectures given by the resource speaker in relation to the Suburban Community Gardening in Brgy. Barra, Tudela.
Agriculturist Ma. Shairah P. Tubigon, CAF faculty, LSC Adviser, and Community Extension Coordinator, expressed her deepest gratitude to the Barangay Council of Barra. She introduced that the activity was the start of the college's community extension effort. The college will further extend technical assistance to the community to improve their livelihood by implementing vertical and organic farming in their communal garden.
Ms. Junalyn M. Uy, a 3rd-year BS Agriculture student, was the resource person on Community Gardening in suburban areas. The lecture ran for about two hours. She discussed the importance of community gardening, its benefits to human health and the environment, types of suburban gardening, vertical farming, composting, and tips on setting up the community garden.
Ms. Leah Reyes, a third-year BS Agriculture student, facilitated the evaluation of what the participants learned through a question-and-answer session. Surprisingly, the participants all answered correctly proving their active participation. In return, the participants were rewarded with a token of appreciation from the BS Agriculture students.
The CAF students distributed 100 leaflets about Vertical Gardening and the preparation of Fish Amino Acids as a fertilizer to improve the community's agricultural crop production. These leaflets served as a guide for implementing vertical gardening in their respective community garden and households.
Agr. Ma. Shairah P. Tubigon, together with BSA students, turned over 150 bags of assorted potted seedlings ( eggplant, tomato, and string beans), five sacks of soil potting mix, sprayers, pruning shears, trowels, seedling pots, and seedling bags for their community garden. After the lecture, Agriculture students offered food packs and drinks to the participants.
CAF offered their appreciation to the Local Student Council led by Governor Jhaine Elaica Agan, Ma. Shairah P. Tubigon for organizing and supervising the community extension, and Junalyn M. Uy as the resource speaker. Extended gratitude was given to Kenneth Nino Lascuna and Joshua U. Magtagad (1st Year BS Agriculture) for the provision of their vehicles. However, the whole event will not be possible without the approval of the College’s Dean, Dr. Mildred M. Garcia, MUCEP Director Grace V. Villanueva, and especially our beloved University President, Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon.
This was the college's pilot project for the Brgy. Barra. CAF hopes to establish a sustainable community garden in the barangay. This project is anchored on the recently forged Memorandum of Agreement between the Misamis University and the Barangay Council of Barra. The project aims to provide the coastal community with agricultural technology assistance, logistics, planting materials, and equipment, to foster partnership with the Barra Barangay Council.
