Sailing Toward Success: Misamis University and Briese Schiffahrt Philippines Open Global Opportunities for Maritime Students

Misamis University continues to strengthen its collaboration with Briese Schiffahrt Philippines, a German manning agency representing Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG. The company specializes in the transportation of freight and cargo across Germany and worldwide. On January 13-14, 2025, Briese Schiffahrt Philippines conducted a recruitment drive for marine cadets at the Function Hall of Misamis University. The activity aimed to select candidates for one-year shipboarding assignments aboard the international vessels of Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG, in compliance with MARINA requirements.

The recruitment activity was conducted by Briese personnel, including C/M Jill V. Colango, 2/E Jhea Macapañas, and 2/M Ruth Jonah Agomaa. They administered qualifying examinations to a total of 130 students from the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering programs. Headed by the College Dean, Capt. Arturo M. Genon, the event was facilitated by MU personnel, including C/E Maurece S. Bonita, Capt. Angelo S. Cabatingan, and Capt. Allan M. Abucay, who provided support throughout the event.

The two-day activity began with an orientation on the morning of January 13, followed by an online examination in the afternoon. Of the 130 participants, 62 students passed the examination and were interviewed by the Briese recruitment team the next day. These successful candidates will embark on a one-year shipboarding program aboard Briese’s international cargo ships after completing their Classroom Instruction in April. They will then undergo a one-month training program facilitated by Briese before their deployment begins in July 2025.

The qualified cadets will receive allowances during their shipboarding period and are assured of potential employment with Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG upon successfully completing the program. Further, completing the one-year shipboarding will qualify them to take the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) examinations for Bridge Watchkeeping and Engineering Watchkeeping. This program offers cadets a clear pathway to promotion and long-term career opportunities in the maritime industry.

The Linkages Office and the College of Maritime Education are working together to secure additional employment opportunities for students who were not selected by Briese. Currently, they are actively seeking partnerships with other shipping companies to ensure all maritime students secure employment after completing their Classroom Instruction. Misamis University remains committed to supporting its maritime students in building successful careers in the global shipping industry.
