MU Faculty Wins 2nd Place at 7th RHRC for the 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition
Misamis University (MU) continues to advance research excellence as Dr. Sammy B. Taghoy, Dean of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Radiologic Technology, won 2nd Place in the 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition during the 7th Regional Health Research Conference (RHRC) organized by the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research and Development (NorMinCoHRD). Held on October 22–24, 2024 at the Little Theater, Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, the event highlighted Dr. Taghoy’s commitment to advancing health research that supports regional and national health priorities.
Aligned with national health policies promoting immunization and health awareness, as well as the global agenda for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Dr. Taghoy’s research addresses critical gaps in maternal knowledge and compliance regarding school-based immunization programs.
The study, titled “Maternal Knowledge, Perceptions, and Compliance to School-Based Immunization for Grade 7: Basis of a Health Awareness Program,” was designed to achieve several key objectives: assess maternal knowledge and perceptions regarding school-based immunization, determine compliance levels, and provide actionable recommendations for health awareness interventions to improve immunization coverage among adolescents.
To implement the study, Dr. Taghoy administered a survey questionnaire to mothers of Grade 7 students and analyzed the resulting quantitative data to determine levels of knowledge, perceptions, and compliance related to school-based immunization. The findings were then synthesized into a concise, policy-oriented presentation. The 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers format required distilling the quantitative results into clear, actionable insights for policymakers, emphasizing both evidence-based conclusions and practical recommendations for strengthening community health interventions.
The outputs of this initiative included a well-structured research presentation, validated data on maternal knowledge and compliance, and policy recommendations for improving school-based immunization programs. These outputs were effectively communicated during the RHRC, allowing policymakers, educators, and health professionals to understand and apply the findings in their respective communities.
The outcomes of Dr. Taghoy’s work demonstrated increased awareness among policymakers of the challenges and opportunities in maternal compliance to adolescent immunization programs. The presentation facilitated dialogue on strategies for community education, preventive healthcare, and evidence-based policy implementation. Additionally, the recognition in the competition strengthened the visibility of MU-led research initiatives in the region.
The long-term impact of this research aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, contributing to healthier, more resilient communities through improved immunization coverage, informed maternal decision-making, and the promotion of preventive healthcare measures. Dr. Taghoy’s achievement underscores Misamis University’s commitment to supporting research that informs health policy, strengthens community well-being, and reinforces MU’s position as a leader in health research and innovation in Northern Mindanao.
