Misamis University Hosts 3rd International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change by MU Research Office

Misamis University has just concluded the 3rd International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change 2023 (IConBaCC-2023) in collaboration with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University, India, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Deemed University, India, and Kasetsart University (KU), Thailand, on October 12-13, 2023 via Online Platform, with the theme, "Addressing Climate Emergency through Community Empowerment and Innovative Solutions toward Sustainability." This Research Conference is intended to carry on with our advocacy to provide an international platform for various stakeholders to meet and interact on global concerns like climate change.

The conference was graced with 91 research presenters and around 900 registered participants from the 21 participating schools within and outside the country.

The 2-day conference became more meaningful with the warm welcome messages from our very own University President, Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon; the Director for CHEDRO X, Dr. Freddie T. Bernal, CESO III; the Provincial Governor of Misamis Occidental, Gov. Atty Henry S. Oaminal; Dr. Chongrak Wachinrat, the President of Kasetsart University, Thailand; Dr. Saranjit Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, India; and Dr. Partha Sharati Mallick, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology.

It was a knowledge-filled experience for all the conference participants, with the sharing of insights from the field experts with the keynote message of Director Elenida Del Rosario-Basug of DENR Climate Change Service, and the plenary presentations of Prof. Kornsorn Srikulnath, Department of Genetics and Faculty of Science from Kasetsart University, Thailand; Prof. G. P. Ganapathy, Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management, from Vellore Institute of Technology, India; Prof. Emeritus Olga M. Nuneza, Department of Biological Sciences, from MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, Philippines; Prof. Prasantha K. Rath, School of Applied Sciences, from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, India; and Prof. Darren K. Griffin, School of Biosciences from University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom.

Dr. Srikulnath discussed the pivotal role of Genomics in fostering sustainable solutions within the framework of the agrobiodiversity renaissance. In the face of threats posed by habitat loss, climate change, and human activities, the synergy between genomics and sustainable solutions emerges as a hope for safeguarding the planet's invaluable biological heritage. This emphasis was supported by the presentation of Dr. Griffin on "Conversations and conservation," which emphasized creating conversations to maximize the use of genetics/genomics in applied conservation management

Dr. Nuneza discussed how climate change affects regional and global biodiversity and how migratory animals affect ecosystem processes. On the other hand, Dr. Rath introduced how Geopolymers, a type of inorganic polymer with a strong three-dimensional network structure, have emerged as a promising alternative to Portland cement for immobilizing hazardous, toxic, and nuclear wastes. While Dr. Ganapathy presented the developed Sustainable Community Early Warning System (SCEWS) as a comprehensive and proactive approach to identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks and threats to a community's well-being, sustainability, and resilience.

The conference was also highlighted with the parallel sessions where various research outputs where presented which centered on The Realities of Biodiversity and Climate Change, Environmental Impacts of Climate Change, Human Impacts and Responsibility, Technological Responses, and Social and Political Responses.

It was indeed a very fruitful and successful conference! Kudos to the organizers, co-organizers, and the working committee!
