Misamis University: Strengthening Communities Through Learning
Misamis University demonstrates its commitment to inclusive and community-oriented education by providing free access to a wide range of educational resources. From library collections and online journals to shared facilities and hands-on training programs, MU ensures that learners, educators, and community members have the opportunity to engage in meaningful learning experiences. Through these initiatives, the university not only supports academic growth but also fosters collaboration, skill development, and lifelong learning for the broader community.
LEARNING RESOURCES
The University Library, with 79, 026 collection of books, is open to visitors and external researchers. The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) can be accessed through the URL (ils.mu.edu.ph). OPAC serves as a directory of all references found in the MU Library. Hard copies of the books can be borrowed on-site. Library services that can be offered include unlimited internet access, document scanning and photocopying, and the electronic resource section.
The University Library has successfully turned over around 1500 books, 5 shelves, and 50 chairs for this year to the partner public schools of Misamis University. These communities include Barra Elementary School, Misamis Annex Integrated School, and Baybay Central School.
Embracing teamwork and volunteerism, Misamis University joined the 2025 Brigada Eskwela to help public schools in Ozamiz and Tudela prepare for the new school year. MU contributed library chairs and other resources, strengthening school facilities, encouraging student engagement, and supporting a nurturing environment for academic growth.
In celebration of its 95th Foundation Anniversary, Misamis University reinforced its commitment to community learning by turning over 67 journals and 110 books to the reading clinic in Barangay Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental. The initiative, as part of the Joint Community Extension on October 10, 2024, benefited 178 students and 9 school administrators and teachers, providing access to quality learning resources and promoting collaboration between the university and the community.
Misamis University’s Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies (JMDS) is a peer-reviewed international open access journal with issues from 2013-2025. It accepts papers in the field of natural and social sciences, engineering and technology, agriculture and forestry, health, environmental studies, education, law and governance, language and linguistics, and communication.
SHARED FACILITIES
The Misamis University served as a place for community learning on October 25, 2025, as the College of Criminology partnered with the Land Transportation Office in Ozamiz to hold a Theoretical Driving Seminar for aspiring drivers.
Misamis University’s Covered Court came alive on September 5, 2025, as the College of Computer Studies hosted a Reverse Pitching Mentorship that brought together students, mentors, and community partners for a day of hands-on learning. In partnership with DTI and DICT Misamis Occidental, the event helped students strengthen their digital skills and develop practical solutions for real community needs—showing MU’s commitment to quality, inclusive, and future-ready education.
The College of Business and Management of Misamis University strengthened its commitment to community learning by holding a Seminar-Workshop on Business Strategies for the Linusas-Laburak Cooperative. Held at the AVR of the Maria Mercado Building, the activity equipped cooperative members with practical skills, new ideas, and capacity-building tools to support sustainable growth and long-term resilience.
Misamis University’s College of Arts and Sciences hosted the Training Assistance for Sangguniang Kabataan (TASK) at the MU Function Hall for SK officials from the Local Government Unit of Clarin. Through TASK, under the BAGIDA community initiative, the session offered young leaders meaningful learning opportunities and essential skills that support their growth and strengthen their capacity for responsible and effective public service.
Misamis University conducted ICT skills training for hospital support staff at its Computer Laboratory, in partnership with Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center. Faculty and student facilitators guided participants through hands-on sessions to build digital literacy, practical skills, and professional capacity, improving workplace efficiency and supporting long-term career growth in modern public service.
In November 2024, Misamis University reinforced its commitment to quality education and lifelong learning through a computer training program for LILAC. Conducted in collaboration with the College of Computer Studies and the Graduate School Department (MBA and DM), the session was led by resource speaker Ms. Goldah Grace Sultan, who equipped participants with essential digital skills to enhance their personal and organizational development, fostering community capacity-building and continuous learning.
Misamis University hosted the 8th Regional Health Research Conference on October 7–9, 2025, at the HT Feliciano Activity Center in Ozamiz City, in partnership with the Northern Mindanao Consortium for Health Research and Development. With the theme “Regional Health Research in Action: Driving Innovation, Impact, and Inclusive Growth,” the event provided a platform for researchers, faculty, and health professionals to share knowledge, enhance research skills, and strengthen capacity for evidence-based solutions in the region.
Misamis University hosted the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators Northern Mindanao Regional Conference in IT Education on November 20–21, 2025. Held at the MU Ozamiz Campus, the event brought together IT educators and researchers to share insights, strengthen professional skills, and promote collaborative approaches to advancing education and research in support of sustainable development.
In partnership with the Colleges of Engineering and Technology and Medical Technology, Misamis University conducted a community extension activity on December 3, 2024, in Barangay Stimson Abordo, Ozamiz City, to assess water quality and pipes. Faculty, staff, and students, together with the Linusas-Laburak Cooperative (LILAC) members, collected samples and analyzed them at the MU Laboratory, applying practical skills and hands-on learning to support community health and safety.
Through its open-access learning resources, shared facilities, and community-focused programs, Misamis University exemplifies how higher education institutions can give knowledge, skills, and empowerment beyond the classroom. By making resources available to the public, MU strengthens community partnerships, promotes lifelong learning, and ensures that quality education extends to all members of society, reinforcing its role as an institution for inclusive and practical learning opportunities.
