Cultivating Intercultural Communication through the Indonesian Language and Cultural Understanding
Misamis University, in collaboration with Universitas Amikom Purwokerto in Indonesia, will hold two online classes titled “Cultivating Intercultural Communication Through the Indonesian Language and Cultural Understanding” on April 10 and 17, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. via Zoom. The program aims to enhance students’ understanding of regional languages and cultures, with a particular focus on Indonesia as one of the Philippines’ closest neighbors and a leading economy in ASEAN.
The sessions will cover basic Bahasa Indonesia training, where students will learn essential vocabulary, engage in daily conversations, and acquire simple professional communication skills for academic, travel, and exchange purposes. It will also include an Indonesian cultural literacy session that introduces social norms, values, and diversity, promoting a deeper understanding between Filipino and Indonesian cultures. Additionally, students will examine how English is utilized in Indonesia across various academic, business, and digital contexts.
This program is designed for forty (40) Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) students to broaden their cultural and linguistic competencies. It aims to expose them to the Indonesian cultural and communication environment, helping them develop a wider perspective in dealing with guests from diverse backgrounds in the hospitality industry. Through this experience, students will better understand how cultural differences influence communication approaches and service delivery in global hospitality settings.
The sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Ade Tuti Turistiati, MIRHRM, a senior lecturer and Head of the Communication Science Program at Universitas Amikom Purwokerto. She holds a doctoral degree in Communication Science from Padjadjaran University and a master’s degree in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from the University of Sydney, Australia. Her expertise in intercultural and digital communication, along with her active engagement in research and community initiatives, will provide valuable insights for the participating students.
In today’s increasingly interconnected Southeast Asian region, cross-cultural competence and multilingual ability are essential for academic collaboration, student mobility, and future employability. This prepares BSHM students equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an international environment.
