Misamis University Promotes Sustainable Agriculture in Selected Communities in Misamis Occidental
Young Farmers Promote Sustainable Vertical Gardening in Coastal Baranay of Barra, Tudela
Misamis University College of Agriculture and Forestry (MU-CAF) mobilized young farmer-volunteers to bring vertical gardening to coastal residents of Barangay Barra, Tudela, Misamis Occidental. The initiative delivered technical training on vertical and organic gardening, distributed seedlings and planting supplies, and helped equip local households to grow vegetables even with limited space. The project aims to improve food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.
Launch of “Teamnabangay Gulayan sa Barangay” - Suburban Community Gardening Project
On December 5, 2024, MU-CAF formally launched a community-gardening program in Barangay Barra, Tudela. The “Teamnabangay Gulayan sa Barangay” project provides the coastal community with agricultural technology assistance, planting materials, and equipment. During the event, MU agriculture students gave lectures on community gardening, vertical farming, composting, and organic farming. Then they turned over seedlings (eggplant, tomato, string beans), soil mixes, sprayers, and other gardening tools for the communal garden. Leaflets on vertical gardening methods and fish-amino-acid fertilizer were also distributed to help sustain the initiative
Sustainable Land Management Initiative in Barangay Baybay, Bonifacio
From October to December 2021, MU, through its community-extension arm, implemented a “Sustainable Land Management (SLM)” initiative in Barangay Baybay, Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental — funded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) – Bureau of Local Government Supervision. The project targeted around 50 households and sought to raise awareness on sustainable soil and water use, soil conservation, composting, waste management, and marine pollution prevention. Activities included lectures, focus group discussions, production of information?education?communication (IEC) materials, and establishment of a communal composting facility — with the goal of mobilizing households to adopt composting and better land?use practices.
College of Agriculture and Forestry Strengthens Environmental Education and Community Engagement
The College of Agriculture and Forestry continues to engage in environmental protection and sustainable resource management through dynamic learning activities and community outreach programs. Faculty members and student leaders from the college played an active role in facilitating the event, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to nurturing future advocates of environmental conservation. Through hands-on engagement, participants were introduced to key concepts in water resource management, biodiversity, and climate resilience—topics that lie at the core of the college’s academic and extension thrusts. Their involvement also highlighted the importance of collaboration between higher education and basic education in cultivating early appreciation for natural ecosystems.
Beyond the classroom, the College of Agriculture and Forestry consistently extends its expertise to local communities through research, capacity-building programs, and conservation partnerships. The college reinforces its mission to produce graduates who are not only technically skilled but also environmentally responsible. With ongoing efforts in sustainable agriculture, forestry, and ecosystem stewardship, the college remains a vital contributor to protecting Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park and the broader ecological landscape of Misamis Occidental.
