Misamis University Signs MOU for Partnership with Universidad Cristóbal Colón
Misamis University has forged a partnership with Universidad Cristóbal Colón (UCC) of Veracruz, Mexico through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on September 24, 2026, in the morning (September 23 evening in Mexico).
The signing ceremony was conducted in a hybrid format, with the signatories and participants from both institutions joining from their respective campuses and connecting online through MS Teams. The ceremony was also displayed on screens at both venues.
Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon, President of Misamis University, and Padre Francisco Javier Alonso Arroyo, Rector of Universidad Cristóbal Colón, signed the MOU from their respective locations. During the ceremony, Dr. De Leon welcomed the participants from both institutions and shared the rationale for the partnership. Padre Arroyo, meanwhile, delivered his message and expressed his happiness over the partnership with Misamis University. He also warmly welcomed Misamis University and looked forward to the eventual visit of the MU President to the UCC campus in Veracruz.
The Misamis University attendees were composed of administrators, deans, department heads, and selected students representing the University’s 11 colleges. Representing Universidad Cristóbal Colón were its Rector, Padre Arroyo; Dr. Sergio Román Jara, Director of the Faculty of Science and Technology; M. Ed. Selma Lizette Ramón Marín, Coordinator of Internationalization; and Daniela Sánchez Contreras, Internationalization Assistant.
Universidad Cristóbal Colón is a Catholic university in Veracruz, Mexico, founded and operated by the Order of the Piarists. It offers programs that are similar to those of Misamis University, providing opportunities for collaboration in areas such as Medicine, Nutrition and Food Science, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Economics, International Business, Computer Systems, Education, Communication, Law, Languages, and Psychology, and other related fields.
During the program, Ms. Marín presented the potential areas of collaboration between the two institutions in their respective academic programs. Dr. Lloyd Ranises, Director of the Office of Linkages and International Affairs, welcomed the proposed areas of collaboration, particularly the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative, which was also included in the partnership discussions.
Dr. Ranises also highlighted the historical connections between the Philippines and Mexico, particularly their shared Spanish colonial history, as well as common influences in language and Christianity. He expressed hope that the partnership would lead to an active and continuing connection between the two institutions and result in collaborations that are operational, relevant, responsive, and sustainable.
