Misamis University Presenters Participate in the Third National and Fourth International KU Social Sciences Conference 2026

Misamis University congratulates its student, faculty members, and administrator whose research papers were accepted for presentation by the reviewers of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand, through the facilitation of the Office of Linkages and International Affairs (OLIA). The accepted papers were presented online during the Third National and Fourth International KU Social Sciences Conference 2026, held in hybrid format on September 4, 2026, with the theme, “Social Sciences for Sustainable Development: Transforming Global Frameworks into Local Foundations in an Era of Uncertainty.”

The MU presenters represented various colleges and research areas, as follows:

Marc Margaux M. Quiao, student of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, College of Agriculture and Forestry, with the paper entitled “Assessing Long-Term Copra Price Stability in the Philippines: Implications for the Livelihoods of Coconut Farmers.”

Jose F. Cuevas, Jr., Dean of the College of Criminology, with the paper entitled “Negotiated Justice: Voices Behind Plea Bargaining in Drug-Related Cases.”

Teopisto Y. Culanag, Jr., College of Criminology, with the paper entitled “A Mediation Test of Social Interaction and Technology Use on the Relationship Between Motivated Strategy for Learning and Academic Performance Among Criminology Students.”

Winnie A. Bhagwani, College of Arts and Sciences, with the paper entitled “Lived Experiences of Prostituted Women Engaging in Online Services: A Phenomenological Study.”

Ariel A. Apao, College of Business Management, with the paper entitled “Income Volatility, Debt, Savings Management Strategies, and Financial Stability of Solo Parents.”

Their research represented diverse areas and pressing issues in Philippine society, including food supply and security, the justice system, teaching innovation, the experiences of women engaged in prostitution, and financial capability, topics that strongly resonate with the scope and objectives of the Kasetsart University Social Sciences Conference.

The conference focuses on contemporary social issues arising from interconnected challenges such as climate change, technological disruption, demographic shifts, geopolitical tensions, misinformation, and social polarization. It likewise addresses agri-food systems, urban development, tourism, communities, education, and well-being, as well as the roles of media, law, technology, digital transformation, and social innovation in addressing contemporary concerns.

The conference further highlights the importance of history, culture, area studies, geography, geoinformatics, and community heritage in shaping socially accepted and sustainable pathways for development. It emphasizes the pivotal role of the social sciences in bridging global aspirations with local actions and in fostering resilience in rapidly changing societies.

The MU presenters contributed to these broader discussions by bringing local research and perspectives from Ozamiz City and Northern Mindanao to an international academic platform. During the presentations, the panel of experts and co-presenters provided valuable opportunities for discussion, allowing the MU researchers to further explain their studies, respond to questions, deepen the understanding of their findings, and gain insights from perspectives shared by researchers from other countries.

Through these exchanges, the MU presenters were able to situate local issues within a broader international context. The discussions enabled them to compare Philippine experiences with those of other countries and to view their locally grounded research through a global and comparative lens.

With their papers accepted and presented at the conference, the researchers are now moving toward the next stage of publication by incorporating the insights and recommendations gained during the conference discussions into their manuscripts for submission to the Kasetsart Journal.

This international academic participation contributes significantly to advancing the international engagement of Misamis University, providing its students and faculty members with opportunities to share locally grounded research, engage with international scholars, and contribute Philippine perspectives to global conversations in the social sciences.
