Misamis University Partners with SEC Cagayan de Oro Extension Office to Promote Financial Literacy
Misamis University (MU) has forged a partnership with the Securities and Exchange Commission–Cagayan de Oro Extension Office (SEC CDOEO) to promote financial literacy, responsible investing, and investor protection.
The two institutions formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) dated October 23, 2026, at the Misamis University Function Hall in Ozamiz City. Misamis University is headed by its President, Dr. Karen Belina F. De Leon, while SEC CDOEO is led by Director Atty. Frederick Enopia.
Also present during the MOA signing ceremony were Dr. Lloyd B. Ranises, Director of the Office of Linkages and International Affairs, and Dr. Analyn Clarin, Vice President for Academic Affairs, of Misamis University. Representing SEC CDOEO at the event were SEC Counsel Atty. John Henri P. De Veyra and Mr. Neil Maynard C. Conde.
Under the agreement, MU and SEC CDOEO will collaborate on projects and activities designed to promote financial literacy and investor protection among Filipinos locally and abroad. Their partnership includes the development, production, implementation, and promotion of information, education, and communication materials covering the fundamentals of investing, financial literacy, investor protection, and investment scams.
The two institutions also intend to disseminate educational materials to students, faculty members, and other beneficiaries through programs, training sessions, and seminars. They will share program links and information through digital platforms to broaden public access to financial education and explore the development of web-based training programs.
Following the MOA signing, SEC CDOEO conducted a Financial Literacy and Investor Education Seminar for MU administrators, deans, program heads, and students. The seminar marked the first collaborative activity between SEC CDOEO and Misamis University under the newly established partnership. The event ran until 3:00 p.m. and gathered 98 participants, including 55 students representing the University's 11 colleges.
The morning session focused on the fundamentals of saving, sound financial decision-making, and responsible spending. It equipped participants with a better understanding of how to make wise financial choices and develop responsible spending habits.
The afternoon session covered corporate and investment matters, including investment scams. Participants learned about potential fraudulent schemes involving corporations and investment- related entities, as well as ways to recognize warning signs and protect themselves from becoming victims of scams.
Both university personnel and students actively participated in the day's activities, reflecting the importance of financial education in making informed financial decisions.
The partnership marks the beginning of further collaboration between Misamis University and SEC CDOEO in advancing financial education initiatives. Through this undertaking, the University keeps its academic community informed about emerging industry trends, financial issues, and investment-related developments while providing students and personnel with practical knowledge and skills for responsible financial decision-making.
