Building Sustainable Communities Through Research: MU at ICAED 2025
With a strong advocacy of the practical applications of research for the community, Dr. Russel P. Galindo (MU Research Director) and EnP. Grace V. Villanueva (Misamis University Community Extension Program Director) participated in the 2025 International Conference on Agricultural Economics and Development (ICAED 2025) on September 10-11 at the Grand Regal Hotel, Davao City.
Gathering researchers, policymakers, and various stakeholders worldwide, ICAED 2025 is driven by the theme, “Translating Research into Policy and Practice for the Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Natural Resources (AANR) Sector in the Asia and Pacific.” The conference was graced by Dr. John Dixon from the University of Queensland, Australia, as a keynote speaker. Plenary speakers included Dr. Mercedita A. Sombilla (SEARCA), Prof. Maria Fay Rola-Rubzen (Curtin University), and Mr. Yoshiaki Miwa (MJ-STEP). Fruitful discussions on the different global issues were later held through a roundtable discussion.
The conference also facilitated research poster presentations for the participants. Dr. Galindo presented her study titled “Management Effectiveness of the Locally Managed Marine Protected Areas in Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines.” The research aims to (1) determine the attributes and characteristics of the identified five locally-managed marine protected areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula; and (2) assess the management effectiveness of these locally managed protected areas.
EnP. Villanueva presented the study titled “Valuation of Forest Ecosystem Services of Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park, Misamis Occidental.” The objective of the study was to estimate the economic value of MMRNP in support of developing policies and financing mechanisms for its sustainable management. It envisions water consumers paying an additional fee on their water bill in support of Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park. The average willingness to pay is Php 35.01. The amount gathered shall be used to implement conservation programs like improving the forest cover, riverbank rehabilitation, tree growing, the establishment of forest parks in barangays or municipalities, and increased environmental awareness. This study serves as a basis for formulating the policy that is now being endorsed in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Misamis Occidental by the MMRNP Protected Area Management Board
The event was organized by the University of the Philippines Mindanao (Office of Research), Agri-Aqua Value Chain Laboratory, and the University of Western Australia’s Center for Agricultural Economics and Development. It was funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Misamis University was also an implementer of DOST-PCAARRD projects through the “Valuation for Forest Ecosystem Services” in 2022.
Misamis University’s participation in ICAED 2025 demonstrated its continued commitment to research that benefits communities. Through events like this, the University learns new ideas and shares its own best practices. These efforts help strengthen MU’s role in supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, especially in building educated and resilient communities. With each collaboration, MU moves closer to turning research into real solutions that improve people’s lives.
