MU Staff, One of the Chosen Fellows for UP-MSI’s Blue Beat Initiative (BBI)
The University of the Philippines – Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI), in collaboration with the Association of Young Environmental Journalists (AYEJ), initiated the Blue Beat Initiative: Short Course on Marine Science Communication. Along with the 14 journalists, news anchors, reporters, and information officers from across the country, Ms. Goldah Grace D. Sultan of Misamis University Community Extension Program (MUCEP) was selected to join in the five- day in person training and capability building program.
The training and workshop program was held from December 12 to 16, 2022, in Bolinao, Pangasinan. As posted in the UP-MSI's website, the program was aimed to "increase the conversation on science research and environmental issues, specifically in the marine landscape, by encouraging a more extensive media coverage".
Esteemed science journalist and advocates, including Rhyn Esolana, Advocacy Communications Officer of AYEJ; Dave Albao, Executive Director of Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PRRCFI); Val Ameil Vestil, Founder and Executive Director of AYEJ; Fatima Arkin, Journalist; Renee Karunungan, Science Communicator, Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research; Dr. Deo Onda, Project Leader of BBI and Associate Professor of UP-MSI; and Chiara Zambrano, Journalist and Documentary Filmmaker, ABS-CBN News, delivered a series of lectures throughout the program.
In addition, the participants were also granted the opportunity to tour around UP-MSI Bolinao Marine Laboratory (BML), including its giant clam nursery, and conduct interviews with researchers. As an output of this initiative, the participants produced science articles out from the researches conducted by UP-MSI.
