3,000 Mangrove Seedlings Planted as Misamis University Joins Tree-Growing Activity for the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem
On July 25, 2025, Misamis University participated in growing 3,000 mangrove trees. The initiative was organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) Ozamiz City at Barangay Dela Paz, Clarin, in celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem 2025. This activity not only highlighted the importance of mangrove ecosystems but also aimed to raise awareness of the need to protect them.
This activity successfully mobilized volunteers from Misamis University, the Misamis Occidental Volunteers for the Environment (MOVE) – MU Chapter, Global Port Terminal of Ozamiz City, the Philippine Ports Authority, the Philippine Coast Guard, and other partner agencies. The event was also held in line with the celebration of National Disaster Resilience Month, which is observed every July, pursuant to Executive Order No. 29 signed in 2017. The observance focuses on ensuring that the well-being of every Filipino is well taken care of so that they can efficiently contribute to our effort to build a disaster-resilient nation.
Planting mangrove trees in a coastal town like Clarin is relevant to the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month because mangrove trees help towns and provinces become more resilient to natural disasters. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal communities by mitigating the impact of waves and serving as natural barriers during storms. They also serve as breeding and nursery grounds for small fish, offering shelter from predators. More importantly, mangroves help fight climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the air.
Dr. David Calabro also participated in the mangrove planting activity. He is a retired Senior Scientific Associate at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company. He will be one of the plenary speakers for the upcoming 4th International Conference on Biodiversity and Climate Change 2025 (IConBaCC-2025) organized by Misamis University in the Philippines, in collaboration with Kasetsart University (Thailand), VIT Bhopal University (India), and INTI International University (Malaysia). He shared that it was his first time joining such an initiative, expressing both his enjoyment and interest in engaging in similar environmental efforts in the future.
The successful event showcased Misamis University’s commitment to developing socially responsible and environmentally aware citizens, making a positive impact on the community, and encouraging sustainable practices for the future.
